Questions founders ask
What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a URL, such as utm_source=linkedin. Analytics tools like GA4 read them to attribute a visit to a specific channel and campaign. The three you should always set are source, medium and campaign.
Are UTM parameters case sensitive?
Yes. GA4 treats "LinkedIn" and "linkedin" as two different sources, which splits your reports. Keep every value lowercase and use one separator, either hyphens or underscores, across the whole team.
Should I use UTM links on internal links?
No. UTM tags on links inside your own site start a new session and overwrite the original source, so you lose the real attribution. Use them only on links that point to your site from somewhere else, like social posts, emails, ads and partner pages.
