# The Wire Service Trap: A Press Release Is Not PR

By [Shilika Jain](https://www.shilikajain.com/authors/shilika-jain) - 10/15/2026

Why paid press releases and wire distribution do not count as coverage, what they cost crypto founders in credibility, and the launch plan I use instead.

# The Wire Service Trap: A Press Release Is Not PR

A press release is a document. A wire service is a paid delivery channel for that document. Neither one is PR, and neither one is coverage. PR is the work of getting a journalist to decide your story deserves their byline. Founders who mistake one for the other spend real money and then wonder why the media still ignores them.

## Is a press release on a wire service real coverage?

No, and the confusion is common enough that I posted about it in May 2026.

> Most crypto founders confuse press releases with PR. That's why they get ignored.

When you pay a wire, your own text is syndicated to the press release sections of the sites in that network. Nobody in a newsroom chose it. Nobody checked it, questioned it or added context. It usually carries a press release or sponsored label, and regular readers of those sites have learned to skip that section.

Earned coverage is the opposite on every count. A reporter decided the news mattered, wrote it in their own words, and put their name and their outlet's reputation next to yours. That choice is the whole value. A wire placement cannot give it to you because nobody made a choice.

| | Wire or paid press release | Earned coverage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who decides it runs | You, by paying | An editor or reporter |
| Who writes it | You | The journalist |
| How it is labelled | Press release or sponsored | Editorial |
| What it signals | You had a budget | Someone independent thought it was news |

## Why do so many founders default to wire services?

Because it is easy, and because nobody told them otherwise. In August 2024 I was speaking with early-stage founders across several L1 and L2 ecosystems and kept hearing the same thing.

> About 3 founders i spoke to told me that they use wire services because it's easy to get coverage! Ecosystems + VCs must take proactive initiatives to educate their portcos!
>
> [Shilika Jain on X, 8 Aug 2024](https://x.com/Shilika_jain/status/1821525226489839760)

I understand the appeal. You pay, you get a list of links the same day, and the links look good in an investor update or a community channel. Pitching is the reverse: slow, uncertain and full of silence.

I do not blame first-time founders for this. Most were never taught what PR involves, which is why I think ecosystems and VCs should be educating their portfolio companies before the first announcement, not after the fifth wire release.

## What does relying on wires cost you?

More than the invoice.

> Ppl say that we don't get media attention. That's because your running your press coverages on wire services rather than building up your credibility from scratch!

The costs I see:

- **No relationships.** Every wire release is an announcement no journalist had to engage with. A year later you have a long list of links and not one reporter who knows your founder.
- **No credibility built.** Credibility comes from independent people choosing to write about you. A feed of self-published releases shows activity, not validation.
- **Used-up news.** News only breaks once. If your funding round or launch goes out on a wire first, there is nothing new left to offer a reporter afterwards.
- **A false sense of progress.** The link report looks like results, so the harder work of building a story never starts.

The part that bothers me most is the missed opportunity. In April 2025 I noted how many DePIN and Bitcoin-focused projects were doing paid press releases even though there was room for good earned coverage. Those are sectors with real infrastructure, real numbers and real-world angles, exactly the things reporters look for. If you are building in one of them, see my [DePIN PR strategy](/playbook/depin-pr-strategy-2026) before you pay for another release.

## When does a press release still make sense?

A press release is a useful tool when you treat it as a tool. It gives a journalist the facts, figures, quotes and spellings in one place, which is helpful when it is attached to a personal pitch. It is also a clean public record of an announcement for your own site. If you are writing one, [how to write a crypto press release](/playbook/how-to-write-crypto-press-release-2026) covers the structure.

Paid distribution has a narrow role too: a routine update that needs to exist publicly but that no reporter would cover. I go through the options and what to expect from them in [crypto press release distribution](/playbook/crypto-press-release-distribution-2026).

The mistake is calling that PR, reporting it as coverage, or letting it stand in for the work of earning attention. If you have something to say but no hard news, an argued opinion piece will usually do more for you than another release, which I explain in [op-eds vs press releases](/playbook/op-eds-vs-press-releases).

## What should I do instead for a major launch?

Build up to it. In October 2024 I shared the sequence I use.

> Wanna activate PR for a major launch/announcement? here's a quick strategy: Create active thought leadership 1-2 month before the launch. Secure 1-2 podcasts/interviews 1 month before the launch. AMA - 15 days before the launch. Embargo press outreach: week before the launch.
>
> [Shilika Jain on X, 11 Oct 2024](https://x.com/Shilika_jain/status/1844810665459884246)

Why each step is there:

1. **Thought leadership, one to two months out.** When a reporter receives your pitch, the first thing they do is search the founder. Bylines, posts and a clear point of view give them something to find.
2. **One or two podcasts or interviews, a month out.** These put the founder's voice on record and give you proof that other people already find the story worth a conversation.
3. **An AMA, 15 days out.** This warms up the community so the launch does not land on a cold audience.
4. **Embargoed press outreach, the week before.** Reporters get the news early, under embargo, with time to ask questions and write properly. This is where the press release belongs: as an attachment to a personal pitch, not a substitute for it.

By launch day, the announcement arrives with context around it. For a token event, pair this with my [pre-token-launch PR checklist](/playbook/pre-token-launch-pr-checklist).

## How do I move from paid releases to earned coverage?

Start by being honest in your own reporting. Keep wire pickups and earned stories in separate columns, so nobody on the team, including you, mistakes one for the other.

Then pick your next announcement with real substance and run it the slow way: a specific angle, a short list of reporters who cover that beat, a personal note to each, and enough lead time for them to say yes. You will get fewer links. The ones you get will be worth more.

In October 2025 I asked the algorithm to show my posts only to founders keen to double down on earned PR instead of slapping out paid press releases. I was joking, but only partly. Those are the founders who end up with media attention.
