# Crypto Conference Merch That People Wear and Keep

How to plan crypto conference merch and mascots that people use after the event, with field notes on quality, context, and what builds community.

# Crypto Conference Merch That People Wear and Keep

Merch works when someone would choose to use it with no logo on it. That means better quality, a design that fits a normal wardrobe, and an item that suits the city and the week it is handed out in. A mascot helps when the community likes it and it turns into things people want to own.

## Why does most crypto merch end up unused?

I have been asking for better conference merch since 2022.

> I think one thing we as a crypto community must do is giveaway better quality merch during the conferences!

Two years later I had the proof at home.

> My brother uses my crypto merch (t-shirts) for cleaning purposes! Crypto merch should be something you wear for meetings, date nights, travelling, etc!

The default order is a black tee with a large logo on the chest, because it is cheap, quick and nobody on the team has to make a decision. The person receiving it already owns ten of them. A tee that only works inside a conference hall has a useful life of about three days.

The cost of that is easy to miss. You paid to produce it, ship it and staff the booth that handed it out, and the brand impression ends in a drawer or a bucket. Merch that gets worn keeps showing your name in offices, airports and cafes for a year.

## What makes merch something people use?

My test is the one in that post. Would someone wear this to a meeting, on a date, or on a flight? If the answer is no, the item is a flyer made of cotton.

| Merch that gets binned | Merch that gets worn |
| --- | --- |
| Thin fabric, poor fit, one size run | Good fabric, a fit people would pay for |
| Logo as the whole design | Small mark, design that stands on its own |
| Same item for every city and season | Chosen for the place and the weather |
| Ordered in bulk for anyone walking past | Limited, given to people you spoke with |
| Looks like an advert | Looks like something from a shop |

Context is the part teams skip most often. During India Blockchain Week in December 2024, Bengaluru was cold, and the usual tee was no use to anyone.

> The best merch during the India Blockchain Week would be sweaters, cardigans or jackets. I'd not mind wearing it throughout the day as it's so cold in blr right now.

A jacket handed out on a cold morning gets worn all week, in every photo, at every side event. That is the cheapest reach you will buy at a conference. The same logic gives you an umbrella in a rainy city or something light in a hot one. If you are planning around the Indian event calendar, my [India page](/india) covers how I work in that market.

## Should your project have a mascot?

Often, yes. In March 2025 I wrote down what I look for.

> Mascots are one of the most quirkiest and fun things that you can use as part of your marketing + community building strategy!
>

The four checks from that post:

- It resonates with the community. Ask them before you commit, not after
- It sends good vibes. A mascot should make people smile, not explain your tokenomics
- It depicts your brand. Personality and colours should match how you already speak
- It is something you can create cool merch with. If it does not work as a plush, a pin or a sticker, keep sketching

The last check is the one that links mascots to merch. A character gives you a design system that is not your logo. People who would never wear a protocol's name across their chest will happily carry a small character on a bag, and that character still points back to you.

A mascot is also a positioning choice, so it should follow from your story and not be bolted on afterwards. If the story is still unclear, start with [narrative and positioning](/playbook/web3-narrative-positioning-strategy-2026) and design the character second.

## How does merch build community and not only a queue?

At TOKEN2049 this year the appetite for merch was obvious. In October 2026 I noted:

> Merch hunt was strong, lots of projects with lots of merch tbh.
>
> [Shilika Jain on X, 12 Oct 2026](https://x.com/Shilika_jain/status/2109581426924662975)

A long queue feels like success, but a queue of people collecting free things is not a community. My reasoning is that merch builds community when it signals belonging, and belonging needs some scarcity and some story.

A few ways to get there:

- Give the best items to people who did something: contributed, built, attended a workshop, had a real conversation at the booth
- Make something specific to the event so it marks "I was there"
- Keep a simpler item, such as stickers or pins, for everyone else
- Let the community vote on or design a piece, so it is theirs before it is printed

For one client at TOKEN2049 we made custom souvenirs, and several other teams had clearly raised their standards too. Small, personal items travel home in hand luggage and end up on desks.

If community is the goal, merch is one tool inside a wider plan. I describe that plan on my [crypto community growth](/pages/crypto-community-growth-agency) page.

## How should you plan merch for a conference?

Merch is one job among many for the marketer on the ground. I listed the others once: attending, distributing merch, running quests, explaining the product over and over, thinking up campaigns and networking. Plan the merch early so it does not eat the week.

A short checklist:

1. Decide who it is for. Partners, press and contributors deserve a different item from booth traffic
2. Check the city, venue and weather for the dates
3. Choose one good item over five cheap ones
4. Keep branding small and the design strong
5. Order fewer than you think and tie the best pieces to an action
6. Give your booth team a line to say with it, so every handover starts a conversation
7. Afterwards, watch whether people post it or wear it at the next event

If you are also speaking, bring a few of the better pieces for the people who come up to you afterwards. My guide to [speaking slots at crypto conferences](/playbook/how-to-get-speaking-slots-crypto-conferences-2026) covers how to earn that stage.
