AI startup PR pricing broken down: what $5K, $12K, a $15K to $40K launch sprint and a founder profiling sprint include, what's excluded and how to choose.

# AI Startup PR Pricing: Exactly What You Get at Each Budget

AI startup PR with me is priced in three shapes. A fractional retainer runs $5K to $12K per month for 3 to 12 months. A launch sprint runs $15K to $40K total over 4 to 8 weeks. A founder profiling sprint runs $12K to $25K over 90 days. For content only, there's a $2,500 per month op-ed program, a $3,500 founder essay and a $9,500 whitepaper sprint. Traditional AI-PR agencies typically charge $20K to $50K per month, so these numbers buy senior work at roughly a quarter to a half of agency cost.

Pricing pages usually stop at the range. This one doesn't. Below is what actually happens at each budget level, what's not included, and how to pick.

## Why AI PR prices vary so much

Two AI startups can get quotes of $6K and $40K for what sounds like the same thing. The difference usually comes down to five variables:

- Number of announcements in the period
- Number of markets (US only, or US plus Europe plus APAC)
- Whether there's an embargoed multi-outlet launch to coordinate
- How much founder content gets written and placed
- Who does the work: a senior operator or a junior account team

The last one is the one nobody puts on the proposal. When you compare quotes, ask who writes the pitches and who talks to reporters. That answer matters more than the monthly number.

## The full price sheet

| Offer | Price | Length | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fractional retainer, lower scope | $5K to $7K per month | 3 to 12 months | One market, steady but light news flow |
| Fractional retainer, full scope | $8K to $12K per month | 3 to 12 months | Multiple announcements, founder program, more than one market |
| Launch sprint | $15K to $40K total | 4 to 8 weeks | Funding round, product or model launch |
| AI founder profiling sprint | $12K to $25K total | 90 days | Building the founder as a category voice |
| Op-Ed of the Month | $2,500 per month, 3-month minimum | Ongoing | One tier-1 contributor placement per month |
| Founder Essay Package | $3,500 per piece | Per essay | A single 1,200 to 1,800 word placed essay |
| Whitepaper Sprint | $9,500 | 4 weeks | 8,000 to 15,000 word technical paper |

The split of the retainer range into "lower" and "full" scope is how I explain it to founders, not two fixed packages. Every proposal is scoped to your news calendar. The [AI startup PR service page](/services/ai-startup-pr) covers the full service.

## What each budget actually buys

Each structure below is a real scope, not a menu. Read the one closest to your situation.

### What you get at $5K to $7K per month

This is the focused retainer. One primary market, usually the US. One clear narrative.

A typical month includes:

- [ ] Narrative and messaging upkeep as the product changes
- [ ] A monthly pitch plan with target outlets and angles
- [ ] Direct outreach to a short list of reporters and contributors who cover your space
- [ ] Interview prep before every media call
- [ ] Reactive commentary when news in your category breaks
- [ ] A short monthly report on what was pitched, what landed and what's next

What's not included at this level: multi-market launches, heavy founder content production, and full embargo coordination for a big announcement. If a funding round lands during a lower-scope retainer, we'd usually add a launch sprint for that window.

Fit: seed-stage AI companies with one or two real stories a quarter and a founder who can take interviews.

### What you get at $8K to $12K per month

This is the full retainer. More announcements, more surface area, more founder work.

On top of everything in the lower tier:

- [ ] Founder program: op-ed drafting, podcast pitching and expert-source positioning
- [ ] Embargo management for at least one significant announcement per quarter
- [ ] A second market, often one APAC market such as India, Singapore, Japan or Korea
- [ ] Media training sessions for the CEO and one other spokesperson
- [ ] Coordination with your marketing team on launch timing and owned channels
- [ ] Quarterly narrative review against competitor coverage

Fit: Series A and B AI companies with news every month or two and a founder who wants to be quoted as an authority, not just announced.

### What you get in a $15K to $40K launch sprint

A sprint is for a single moment. It has a start date, a launch date and a two-week tail.

| Phase | Weeks | Deliverables |
|---|---|---|
| Angle and assets | 1 to 2 | Angle options, messaging doc, press kit, founder bio, FAQ for reporters |
| Pre-briefs and embargo | 2 to 4 | Outlet sequencing, exclusive or embargo offers, interview scheduling |
| Launch window | 4 to 6 | Embargo lift, coverage tracking, same-day social amplification plan |
| Tail | 6 to 8 | Follow-on pitches, podcasts, op-ed off the back of the news |

The low end of the range is a single-market, shorter sprint. The high end adds markets, translations, more outlets in the embargo, and a longer tail. If you want to see what a launch at the upper end looks like, the [RARI Chain mainnet launch](/work/rari-chain) ran 11 simultaneous tier-1 placements, then lifted the embargo into coordinated APAC translations. That was a Web3 launch, but the mechanics are the same for an AI model release.

### What you get in a $12K to $25K founder profiling sprint

This is 90 days spent on the founder rather than the company.

- [ ] A written point of view: three to five positions the founder will be known for
- [ ] Op-eds pitched to tier-1 contributor programs and trade outlets
- [ ] A podcast tour targeted at shows your buyers and investors actually listen to
- [ ] Expert-source positioning with reporters covering your part of AI
- [ ] Media training and a message house for interviews

The [Gaia](/work/gaia-ai) work is the clearest example: positioning as "the Stripe for AI agents" through a Forbes feature, a Decrypt deep-dive, Benzinga and a six-podcast founder tour timed to Consensus Hong Kong.

## What is never included, at any budget

Being clear about this saves both of us time.

- Guaranteed placements. Earned media can't be guaranteed honestly.
- Paid placements or sponsored articles dressed up as coverage.
- Paid ads, performance marketing or social media management.
- Event production and booth logistics.
- Design work for whitepapers and reports, which is billed separately.
- Investor relations, though PR and fundraising timing are coordinated closely.

## How to choose your budget

Work from your news calendar, not from a number you picked first.

```text
Step 1. List every announcement planned for the next 6 months.
Step 2. Mark each as "major" (funding, launch, big partnership) or "minor".
Step 3. 0 to 1 major: launch sprint only, or Op-Ed of the Month for founder visibility.
Step 4. 2 major in 6 months: lower-scope retainer plus a sprint for the larger one.
Step 5. 3 or more major, or 2+ markets: full-scope retainer.
Step 6. Founder is the real asset and news is thin: founder profiling sprint.
```

If you're still setting your overall marketing budget, the free [marketing budget calculator](/tools/marketing-budget-calculator) will show what share PR should take at your stage. For how agencies package and price the same work, see the [AI PR agency pricing playbook](/playbook/ai-pr-agency-pricing-packages-2026).

## How to read any PR quote, including mine

Whoever you're comparing, put every proposal through the same filter. The line items below are where budgets quietly leak.

| Line item | What to ask | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| "Media relations" | Which named reporters and outlets, and who contacts them? | No names, just "our network" |
| "Press release distribution" | Why a wire, and which outlets actually pick it up? | Wire fees billed every month by default |
| "Reporting and analytics" | Will it list published pieces by outlet? | Only impressions and "potential reach" |
| "Strategy" | How many senior hours per month? | Strategy is a one-off deck, then silence |
| "Content" | How many pieces, and are they placed or just written? | Blog posts counted as PR deliverables |

A good quote reads like a plan for your news, not a menu of activities. If you'd like a scoring sheet to use across several proposals, the [PR agency evaluation scorecard](/resources/pr-agency-evaluation-scorecard.pdf) does the job.

## Questions founders ask about pricing

**Do prices differ for crypto or cybersecurity?** The retainer and sprint ranges are the same for Web3, AI startup and cybersecurity PR. Token launches and APAC programs are priced separately because the scope is different: a pre-TGE retainer runs $6K to $14K per month, and an APAC single-market launch sprint runs $12K to $35K over 14 to 21 days.

**Can I pay per placement?** No. Pay-per-placement rewards whatever outlets are easiest to land, not the ones that matter to your buyers.

**Why a three-month minimum?** Reporter relationships and story cycles take time. One month is mostly setup. Three months is the shortest window where results can be fairly judged.

**What happens if we raise during a retainer?** We scope a sprint for the round or flex the retainer upward for that month. Your existing messaging work carries straight over.

The cheapest PR is the one that's scoped to the news you actually have.
